Summer learning packs have been set to support children in continuing to read and practise key maths and writing skills over the holidays. There are also ideas linked to our themes for next term and outdoor exploration.
The activities are not compulsory as we know that there are many ‘fun’ ways to incorporate reading, writing and maths into the holiday period -from calculating scores in games to following instructions in recipes!!
So please just enjoy your holidays and use the ideas when needed.
In light of today’s school closure, you may wish to use some of the activities for home learning.
Last Friday, Class 5 was part of the whole school initiative “Waste Day”. During Waste Day we created short films about why it is important to have a plastic free July and designed and calculated the cost of having a disposable and reusable pack lunch. Throughout the day the children learnt lots about waste and the importance of using less plastic.
Year 6 have had a wonderful morning completing experiments remotely from HSLC as part of their transition work. They worked hard and got a lot from the experiments on offer.
Well done Class 5 on reaching the end of half term. We have certainly covered an awful lot this term and your effort levels have been excellent. Personally, I really enjoyed yesterday and the EURO 2021 KS2 competition yesterday and thought your attitude to the whole day was magnificent from start to finish. Please keep an eye out on the PE blog at the start of next half term for the pictures.
We have also worked incredibly hard on our recent topic Mountains, where we have learnt about Edmund Hillary and how different types of mountains are formed. We have also written reports about what life would be like on the mountains and studied and compared different mountain climates around the world.
Homework: Your task over half term is to create your own volcano and make it erupt. You can create it however you like: one idea might be a 2L bottle which you can paper mache. The pictures below may help you with your design. To make it erupt there are two ways I know: one involves adding vinegar to food colouring and bicarbonate of soda. The other involves adding Mentos sweets to Coca-Cola. I look forward to seeing your designs. Please add these along with videos of you blowing it up to seesaw.
This week we have been creating stunning artwork based on mountains. We have focussed on a colour palette and have experimented with watercolour paints.
We have had an incredibly busy start to the Class 5 learning about our new topic “shake rattle and roll”. In theme we have been explaining how different mountains are formed practically using a range of different items! We then created videos (which are on seesaw) and presented these to the class so we could teach each other’s on how the 5 different types of mountains are formed.
In English, we have been doing research and learning about the life of Edmund Hillary. With all this research we are planning to write a biography detailing the major events in his life. Remember homework for the research is due in on Thursday.
In Maths last week we looked at dividing large numbers by 2 digit numbers using a range of different methods. I was incredible impressed by the work they produced and how well they understood the process.
Finally, last week we lots of PE as the weather was so good and I feel we needed to create a team ethos within the class. We spent 2 great sessions playing Golf and Tennis on the field and I must say I was particularly impressed with how well we did.
Before Mrs Altoft shows you today’s learning, I would just like to say a HUGE well done to absolutely EVERY single one of you for your efforts since Christmas. It has been remarkable and I couldn’t be more proud. This period of time has been difficult and is not anything anyone of us could have imagined. However, for me, seeing what you have all completed, how you have dealt with this time and the effort you have put in regardless of being stuck at home has honestly kept me going everyday. You have been amazing and I am really looking forward to seeing you ALL next week – this time for good hopefully (hard work continues however!). Now onto today’s work.
Guided Reading: In this lesson we read part of the climax and consider how the scene and atmosphere changes as the story progresses. We reflect upon our previous predictions and the genre of this text
Maths: Today we are going to focus on finding a percentage of an amount which will lead us nicely into next weeks Maths. Again the usual routine before uploading to seesaw.

Before we get started with today’s activities, please make sure your book cover/picture you made yesterday is visible in a window/in your garden for all to see from outside – it will be needed in Activity 2.
Activity 1 – We are going to start the day with a D.E.A.R session – we are going to DROP EVERYTHING AND READ!
This morning, I would like everyone, whether at home or at school, to find something interesting to read and build a den or find a cosy spot and then READ!
Perhaps you could make a crown to wear while you read.
Remember to share your photos on Seesaw/Evidence Me so we can see you all reading – I hope to make a display back at school.
Activity 2 – So, yesterday I set you the challenge of creating a book cover/picture for one of the following books and then asked you to display it in a window or your garden. The books of choice were…

Today I would like you to go on a walk around the village to see what book covers you can see.
As you walk, please make a tally chart of the different books you find – you will need the results for the next part of the activity.
When you return from your walk, I would like you to create a graph to show which book you found the most. You could use Purple Mash or make a bar graph or pictogram. Year 5/6 perhaps you could really challenge yourself and create a pie chart.
Activity 3 – The official illustrator for World Book Day 2021 is Rob Biddulph. If you are currently in my class, or were in my class last year, you will know that I love to try drawing like the artist himself by following his videos. For our final activity I would like you to try a ‘Draw with Rob’.
